First of all – congratulations on your pregnancy! If you’re reading this right now, you might be pregnant and wondering what the fuss is about when it comes to maternity photoshoots. Let me tell you – the beauty of pregnancy is like nothing else. With so many upcoming changes in your life, you may not have taken the time to consider having your own maternity photoshoot. But, it can be a wonderful way to capture this incredible time in your life.
If you’re considering having maternity photos taken – read on. I’ve included my top tips for expectant mothers who need to get camera ready.
Schedule your session well in advance
The best time to photograph an expectant mom is between 30 and 34 weeks. It’s a great time to capture the grace of pregnancy (and a smooth, round belly), and you’ll be less likely to feel overly fatigued from it. It also helps to book ahead of time so that you can secure your preferred photographer and location.
What’s on your wishlist?
Are there specific images that you want to capture? What about the overall look and feel you’re looking to achieve? Are you going for light and airy or dramatic and impactful? Partial or implied nudes? Let your photographer know what you’re comfortable with and brainstorm some ideas together. You can even create a mood board on Pinterest to gather some inspiration. It will be much easier to create a shot list once you have some examples of what you’re envisioning.
Plan your wardrobe
It’s important to pick out a few wardrobe pieces that can be interchanged – and that you feel comfortable in. Lil’ One Photography also has complementary wardrobe selections, including stunning maternity gowns, for your use. You’ll also want to put some thought into your undergarments – I recommend nude coloured to make sure that they don’t show through your clothing.
What about props?
Consider bringing items of sentimental value with you to your photoshoot – whether it be heirloom family earrings, your soon-to-be newborn’s first sleeper, or an ultrasound image.
Give yourself some love
This is the perfect time to pamper yourself. Go for a manicure! Your hands will be in a lot of the shots, so it’s definitely the perfect excuse to head to the salon! Be sure to stay well moisturized ahead of the photoshoot to give yourself that extra glow.
This goes hand in hand with pampering yourself. Professional hair and makeup will make you feel more confident and sexy during your shoot. If you don’t have the time to book hair and makeup, let me take care of it – I’ve got you covered. Along with the most beautiful wardrobe, my team can recommend hair and makeup artists that will meet with you in studio at your convenience.
Rest, rest, rest!
It can be hard to get a good night’s sleep during pregnancy, but it’s crucial to be rested for your photoshoot. After all, being a model can be hard work, not to mention that you’re modelling for two!
Keep your energy levels up
By eating a healthy breakfast, and staying hydrated, you’ll be less likely to get overly tired. Remember – shoots can last anywhere from one to two hours, so the more energy you have, the better.
Bring the family
Your family members are welcome – whether that be your partner or children. During your maternity session, you’ll want to take a mix of solo photos and some with family members. Remember, you’ll want to plan coordinating outfits for them as well.
Schedule a post-session romantic dinner
Make the most of how beautiful you feel by having dinner with your partner afterwards. It’s a wonderful way to stay connected and celebrate the little bundle that you’re growing.
